Nian, the Chinese Spring or New Years Day Festival

The Spring Festival is the grandest festival for the Chinese. The Spring Festival is also called Nian, but who knows the term, Nian, was once the name of a furious monster that lived on human beings in the ancient time. How the festival has some relationship with the monster lies in a story about the origin and development of the Spring Festival. The legend says, long ago, there was a monster called Nian. It was born to be very ugly and ferocious, which looked like either dragons or unicorns. On the first and the 15th of each lunar month, the monster would come down from the mountains to hunt people. So people were very much afraid of it and locked their doors early before sunset on the days of its coming. There lived an old wise man in a village. He thought it was the panic in people that made the monster so bold and furious. Thus the old man asked people to organize together and to conquer the monster by means of beating drums and gongs, burning bamboo, and lighting fireworks for the purpose of making large noises to threaten the hateful monster. When he told people about the idea, everybody agreed on it. On a moonless and freezing cold night, the monster, Nian, appeared again. The moment it opened its mouth to people, burst out the frightening noises and fire made by people, and wherever the monster went, it was forced to back off by the terrible noises. The monster couldnt stop running until he fell down with exhaustion. Then people jumped up and killed the evil monster. Savage as the monster was, he lost in the end under the efforts from the cooperation of people. Since then, people have kept the tradition by beating drums and gongs, and lighting fireworks at the coldest day in winter to drive the imagined monsters away and to celebrate the victory over it. Today, Nian refers to the New Years Day or the Spring Festival. People often say Guo Nian, which means live the festival. Furthermore, Nian also means the year. For example, the Chinese often greet each other by saying Xin Nian Hao, which means Happy New Year! Xin means new and Hao means good.

The Barbie Phenomenon Essay Example For Students

The Barbie Phenomenon Essay The Barbie phenomenon took the world by storm. The creation of the eleven and onehalf-inch tall glam gal didnt begin at a large corporations drawing board, as some might think. She actually came straight from the hands of her loving parents, Ruth and Elliot Handler. The Mattel Corporation, founded by Ruth and Elliot Handler, has successfully marketed the Barbie doll for over four decades and still continues to sell the doll throughout the world. It is amazing the impact this childs toy has had in both the corporate boardroom and the toy room, and not only on children but also adults. Barbie has brought billons in sales to the bottom line of Mattel, and to adults around the world who have made substantial investments in Barbie collections. Interestingly enough, had it not been for the persistence of one woman, Barbie might never have been born. Ruth Handler was born the youngest of ten children and began her career working as a stenographer at Paramount Pictures. Her husband, Elliot w as born into a family with four brothers and worked as a light fixture designer before returning to school to get his art degree (Lord 20). In 1937 the couple decided to take their first big gamble in life. They both quit their jobs and moved from their home in Denver, Colorado, to start their own business in Southern California (Lord 18). They opened their own home-based business building plexi-glass furniture in their garage (West Interview). Soon after World War II began, the Handlers expanded their business into what used to be a laundromat, and hired workers to help in their new factory making jewelry, candle holders, and other plastic items (Lord 20). Then around 1945, Mr. and Mrs. Handler decided to expand their business once more. The couple began their own company, Mattel Creations with long-time family friend, Harold Mattson as their partner. Mr. Mattsons last name was mixed with Elliots to form the company name Mattel (Lord 20). With the end of the war came an increase in the use of plastic, and Mattel Creations first product, a plastic ukulele called the Ukedoodle hit the toy store shelves. The production of this new toy really helped set Mattels business in motion. After the ukulele, came a jack-in-the-box, which also brought much revenue to the company. Mattel was so successful that by 1950, the company had compiled a net-worth of nearly a half million dollars (Lord 20). We will write a custom essay on The Barbie Phenomenon specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now While Mattel Creations was busy celebrating the success of their famous ukulele and jack-in-the-box, a designer in Germany was diligently creating his own masterpiece; one that would greatly influence the design of the Barbie doll. A man named Reinhard Beuthien created a cartoon character named Lilli who appeared in the comic section of a German newspaper called Bild Zeitung. Soon after, this one-dimensional character called Lilli was transformed into a three-dimensional doll (Bad Girl 1). The doll that Mr. Beuthien produced was eleven and one-half-inches tall, flesh colored and beautifully painted (Lord 25). Her main personality traits included golddigger, exhibitionist, and floozy (Lord 25). However, Lilli was basically a sexy, adult male pornographic toy (Bad Girl 1) not a childs role model or toy (Bad Girl 2). Back in the United States, Ruth started having ideas, while watching her daughter Barbara play with paper dolls, of designing a doll with a womans body. Her daughter wasnt just playing with the dolls; she was intently interacting with them (Lord 29-30). Ruth could see her daughter playing make believe in the land of adult life and thought an actual doll would be quite a phenomena (Lord 30). .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 , .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 .postImageUrl , .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 , .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213:hover , .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213:visited , .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213:active { border:0!important; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213:active , .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213 .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc95a637204e02f5220b4fd9865272213:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: ---- Closest To The Sun EssaySome time later, while shopping on vacation in Switzerland, Mrs. Handler first saw the Lilli doll. She decided to buy three of the dolls, one for herself and two for her daughter (Bad Girl 2). Ruth really wasnt familiar with Lilli or what she represented, but in her, she saw the figure that she had been trying to capture for years, but was told couldnt be done (Lord 29). The doll was so important to her that when the men at the company told Mrs. Handler that the doll was too feminine to be made in the United States, she decided to begin construction somewhere else in the world. It was a year later, in 1957, when an electronic engineer finally t ook the Lilli doll to be redesigned in Japan (Lord 30). These important events helped to finally establish Ruth Handlers place in the doll world (Tosa 29). Named after Ruths own daughter, the dolls name was Barbara Joyce, or Barbie for short, and her much anticipated debut finally came in March of 1959 at New York Citys American Toy Fair (Tosa 30). Barbies success relied heavily on how well her image matched market expectations and fashion trends for kids and adults (Hein 4). In the eye of the parents, she was a great toy (Hein 4). Barbie sent out positive images and sound virtue. She wore a seatbelt, became an astronaut, and ran for President (Hein 6), giving young girls dreams to strive for. Barbie also proved to be a very versatile doll as well. She was everything from a doctor to a firefighter, a paleontologist, and an athlete (Hein 9-10). Not only was Barbie smart, levelheaded, and sophisticated, but for the kids, she was just plain fun. She had a wide array of clothes and accessories, which allowed childrens imaginations to run wild all over the world (Hein 5). For the older generation, she was called a teen-age fashion model, and a new kind of doll from real life (Tosa 30). Through the decades as trends changed, so did Barbie. When the fashion magazines started showing girls with tattoos and bellybutton rings, Barbie sta rted showing them too (Hein 10). Equality for all wasnt just a real life thing; it was also seen in the Mattel world. Barbie produced its first African American doll in 1968 (Hein 7). Shortly thereafter, Mattel released a Spanish-speaking doll, then recently there was a release of a handicapped Barbie (Hein 7). All of these different Barbie dolls were made so that children, while playing with dolls, could begin to have real life experiences (Hein 6). This fantasyland/adult life idea, was one of the best ideas that Mattel had ever had, and the biggest selling point ever. The Barbie doll sold so well its first year in production, that it took three full years to fill the orders (Long 17). Barbies popularity didnt soon die out either. By 1965 Mattel had sold more than one hundred million dollars worth of Barbie merchandise. By 1968, Mattel had Barbie factories in Germany, England, and Mexico, and distributors in Italy and Belgium (Lord 59). In 1964, amidst of all the fame and fortune o f the new doll, times got tough and the company almost went broke as corporate marketing turned away from Barbie on other types of toys. Management began focusing more attention on electronic games than Barbie dolls, but the games did not sell well and the company lost a great deal of money (Lord 15). By 1981, however, Mattel was back on track with thirteen new Barbie dolls on the market. Today Barbie is more popular than ever with collectors and young girls alike. The average American girl under the age of eleven owns ten Barbie dolls (Barbie Overview1), and Mattel introduces more than one hundred new Barbie dolls each year!Barbie is of course, still changing with the times and with the latest technology. She has new electronic games where players can choose to discuss careers, shopping, dating, or parties with her, and her own web site. She has also been the proud recipient of a brain (New Barbie 1). Talk with Me Barbie was just recently unveiled who can actually hold a conversati on with a real human being. Barbie can now even wish a girl happy birthday, but she just cant seem to blow out the candles (New Barbie 1) yet. What does this mere eleven and one-half-inch beauty mean to Mattel? The company realized over $1.5 billion in sales in 1999 in more than 150 countries worldwide (Barbie Overview1). And considering all of the books and videos marketed to attract the adult collectors that have grown up with Barbie over the last four decades, it doesnt look like her popularity is going to fade anytime soon. .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad , .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad .postImageUrl , .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad , .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad:hover , .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad:visited , .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad:active { border:0!important; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad:active , .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u406ab46ae3c51ecc9d587b935eaf2dad:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dust Bowl EssayBibliography:

Jackson released his finding of facts on Nov. 5, he handed state and federal prosecutors an unambiguous triumph. Declaring that Microsoft routinely used its monopoly power to crush competitors, he portrayed the software giant as nothing less than a social menace. Jackson ¡s fact-findings were so critical of the company that they ¡ve raised the stakes in this battle: Suddenly, the breakup of Microsoft is a real possibility.  ¡If you had asked me how likely a breakup of Microsoft was six months ago, I would have said 10%, ¡ says Robert E. Litan, an antitrust expert at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.  ¡Now I say it ¡s 50%. ¡ The last time the government broke up a major company was in1982, when it worked with a cooperative ATBreaking them up is not the right answer, ¡ says Benchmark Capital partner David Beirne, a key backer of Red Hat Software Inc., which makes a Linux, based operating system that competes with Windows. Microsoft president Steven A. Ballmer, in an interview with BUSINESS WEEK, also insisted that the company would be  ¡happy to resolve this as quickly as possible. But, he added,  ¡We aren ¡t going to compromise on the principle of the freedom to innovate. ¡ In other words, the Feds can ¡t tell Microsoft what to put in its products. The main argument for divestiture is that Microsoft has so much power, and is so innately aggressive, that nothing else will keep the company from unfairly preying on rivals. If the government tries to break Microsoft up, there are four structural remedies. Horizontal breakup : Breaking Microsoft into th ...

7 Topics You Should Never Talk About At Work

7 Topics You Should Never Talk About At Work It’s great to feel like you have friendly colleagues and even better when they become your friends outside work, but there are a few danger areas to avoid during your 9-5 interactions. 1. [Insert any  political topic here]I am a big offender with this one. I used to have long angry debates with one of my cube neighbors about everything from social welfare programs to LGBT rights. Not only was it unprofessional, it was also distracting for everyone who I now realize could hear us bickering all day. I didn’t change his mind, he didn’t do anything besides offend me with his opinions, and our whole office probably found us annoying. Plus that irritation spilled over into our professional interactions, too.2. â€Å"I’m soooooooooo tired.†I know it’s just small talk, but griping about your exhaustion level, unless you need some legitimate accommodation in your workload, is tedious (and probably self evident if you’re yawning and downing a vat of coffee at your desk every day).3. Office gossip (particularly boss-related)Some experts feel like office confidences build stronger bonds between team members; others see it as divisive and counterproductive since venting rarely actually leads to positive change or resolution of a tense situation. If something bad is coming, you’ve just spent extra time dreading it. If it comes to nothing, you’ve just wasted the time of everyone you spent swapping conspiracy theories with!4. â€Å"You always ______.† and â€Å"You never ______.†Bad for relationships and bad for the workplace, blanket accusations like this rarely have positive results. Try â€Å"I† statements instead- †When you [fail to deliver a report  on time] I [feel frustrated and fall behind on my deadlines].†5. That’s not my job, that’s not in my contract.I have mixed feelings on this one because agreeing to anything asked of you doesn’t usually lend i tself to strong boundary setting. That said, be a team player when you can, since you’ll probably need some help yourself before long.6. â€Å"Well, actually†¦Ã¢â‚¬ I thought only irritating internet commenters employed this one but apparently it’s spread into the outside world. There are more direct ways to voicing your opinion or a differing perspective than this grating correctional phrase. Just leave it out!7. Personal comments on weight, clothing, race, marital status, sexual orientation, etc. Many of these were probably covered in your company orientation, but one that often gets overlooked in many places I’ve worked is weight or eating habits. At my last job I had a well-meaning coworker who could not stop herself from commenting on what I was eating or not eating, characterizing a pizza lunch as â€Å"Oooh, good to you day† or â€Å"You’re so bad!† when I reached for a sweet snack afterwards. She also commented on my weight- bu t only when she thought I’d lost some. Again, she thought she was being sociable, but it made me really uncomfortable and made her somebody I was hesitant to work with in the future.I hate to say it, but sticking to only discussing your job while you’re at work may be the safest way to go.  7 Things You Should NEVER Say to Co-Workers  Read More at Payscale

Women Colleges Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Women Colleges - Coursework Example Originally steeped towards providing education in the liberal arts (Kiss, 2006), these colleges offer educational opportunities that equal that offered to boys in the men’s colleges. Women’s colleges, especially southern women colleges, were attended mostly by white women; however, black women’s colleges sprang up in the post-Civil War years that significantly contributed to the advancement of the educational opportunities of the black women (Guy-Sheftall, 1982). For instance, Bennett College, an originally co-ed institution, was converted into a liberal art college for black women. Unlike it precursors, the seminaries, which were restricted to women from the upper class, the mid- and late- 19 century women’s colleges were opened to women from the middle classes (Harwarth, Maline, & DeBra, 1999). Indeed, women from the middle class were able to afford a decorous education probably due to increase in philanthropic gestures from donors. The liberation of wom en from their traditional role in the post World War II years led to a corresponding increased in the role of women in the academia and in government (Harwarth, Maline, & DeBra, 1999).

It is a research paper about the topic (Homeless Families) Essay

It is a research paper about the topic (Homeless Families) - Essay Example A majority of these people are thrust into the homeless state by life-altering events that were unexpected. Some tragic life occurrences such as job loss, domestic violence, family disputes, and loss of loved ones can lead to homelessness (Bassuk et al, 2010). Homelessness is by and large a three-pronged problem. It is affected by economic, political, and social factors. The state of homeless families exploded in the early 1980s when federal funds were withdrawn from social assistance and low-income housing programs. The programs were meant to cater for the mentally ill and low-income families. Lack of affordable housing and the rising gap between earnings have left many of families and individuals in America homeless (Nunez, 2000). Economic factors are a central cause, as are social factors such as long-term drug addiction, mental illness, and alcoholism which can contribute to homelessness. Studies show that at least 25 percent of homeless people suffer from a kind of mental illness (NHC 2006). Twenty percent of the homeless are also drug and alcohol addicts, and the lack of access to affordable care can leave them vulnerable to the problem for their entire lives. This paper evaluates various aspects of homeless families such as how hom elessness affects children, and what society is doing to alleviate the problem (Bassuk et al, 2010). The rate of homelessness among American families has grown extensively over the last two decades. Between 2007 and 2010, the number of homeless families rose significantly. In 2007, 30% of the homeless people were in families and the percentage changed to 35% in 2010. This percentage is, however, devoid of the proportion in the suburban and rural areas (Khadduri & Culhane 2011). The affected families experienced frequent moves while in search of employment and secure affordable housing. The turbulence resulting from the movement affects children, and they

Salem Witch Trials

What Caused the Salem Witch Trial Hysteria? 1692 was a year packed with excitement and terror for the citizens of Salem, Massachusetts. Belief and accusations of people being witches/warlocks under the possession of the Devil swept across the town and wreaked havoc among its settlers. There are many possible ways to justify this madness. However, the 3 most valid and evidential reasons are: attention-seeking, jealousy (of one another and the amount of land owned), and lack of acceptance towards each other’s physical flaws and behaviors.Attention-seeking is bound to become an issue in a town such as Salem, merely due to the daily, mundane activities one must pursue in order to live properly. Document G states, â€Å"It was perhaps their original design to gratify a love of notoriety or of mischief by creating†¦ excitement in their neighborhood. † This quote is relating to the behaviors that people were displaying which made them a suspect.Document H revolves around the idea that maybe these young girls were acting out and faking the â€Å"convulsive attacks† that were believed to be evidence in order to give the public what they expected, or wanted. These young girls created an issue much larger than they’d planned to. They most likely were just trying to make themselves known and didn’t understand the impact that their actions would have on the vulnerable minds of their town. Although attention-seeking seems to play the most obvious role in the hysteria, jealousy was also a major contributor.Land ownership was a big deal in this time period (15th century), and the division between the farmers’ and the residents’ amount of property became a cause for vengeance (Document J). Documents K & L are perfect examples of people feeling the need for revenge. The Putnams must have believed that Rebecca Nurse did them terribly wrong when her family took over some of their land, so (as one of the wealthiest families in S alem); they used their word against hers by accusing her to be witch. They probably wouldn’t have done so if they did not genuinely believe she had something more than they had or she did something to personally attack them. This kind of resentment towards one another must’ve became a common issue in Salem, for it seems that many accusations came from people being jealous of each other. Along with jealousy, unacceptance and judgment of people’s features and behaviors became a leading cause for someone to be called a witch. Document E uses statistics to show that a majority of the accused were middle-aged, married women. This document’s information alone gives clues related to sexism and discrimination of age and marital status. In Document M, Linda Caporael suggests that Ergotism, an illness caused by a parasitic fungus called â€Å"ergot,† caused people to hallucinate, become delirious, and go through manic episodes. Perhaps these symptoms were misj udged to be evidence that someone was possessed. Or perhaps the people who ate and retracted the sickness from the food contaminated with ergot were the accusers, and they simply weren’t in their â€Å"right mind. In any event, there was a massive amount of judgment and lack of acceptance to one another, and this played a key role in the chaos of the Witch Trials. Accusations of witchcraft and possession put a scare and a drive to defeat into the citizens of Salem, Massachusetts that year. 20 people were killed, and more than 100 people were accused. There’s a multitude of different explanations as to why. All in all, though, the whole thing could have been avoided if it weren’t for people’s desire for attention, envy, and judgmental mindsets.

Aircraft Wing Design and Aerodynamics System Free Essay Example, 2250 words

The second misleading concept is the Skipping Stone Theory .The second misleading concept is the Skipping Stone Theory .It states that lift is generated by the simple action-reaction forces; momentum is imparted on the aerofoils when air molecules strike the bottom of the aerofoils (NASA 2014). Although the accuracy of this theory cannot be ruled out completely, it, however, does not explain most normal flight conditions, for instance, those of airliners at 35, 000 feet at a speed of 500 mph. The third misconception is the Venturi Theory whereby the upper surface of the aerofoil behaves just like the venture nozzle which constricts the airflow. Air flowing through the constriction increases in speed, and from Bernoulli s Principle, high-speed results to low pressure, and the decreased pressure on the surface of the upper surface generates lift (NASA, 2014). The "Venturi" theory is incorrect in that it tries its velocity is based upon an erroneous assumption; airflow at the constr iction generates the velocity field. 2. Under this section, the paper explores the reasons as to why the aerofoil is rounded and not pointed at the front, why it is thicker at the middle, why it is tapered at the rear and finally, why it is flatter underneath, with a camber making it curve on top. a. Why is it rounded and not pointed at the front is difficult for air to turn through a sharp corner, and even a very slight tilt of the aerofoil would greatly disrupt the smooth flowing of air over the aerofoil.

Answers: Introduction Ethiopian Airlines are the flag carrier of Ethiopia. It is wholly owned by the government of Ethiopia. It started its operations from the year 1946 (Adamski 2012). It expanded to international flights in the year 1951. This airline is a member of the International Air Transport Association and African Airlines Association. The headquarter of this airlines is located at Bole International Airport. It is in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. From here, it serves as many as 82 passenger destinations of which 19 are domestic and 23 freighter (Amankwah-Amoah and Debrah 2012). Ethiopian airlines fly to many locations in Africa. It is much more than any other airlines. It is one of the most profitable airlines in the region of Sub-Sahara. The Economist featured these airlines as an example of excellence in the year 1987. It was named as the most profitable airlines in Africa in the year 2010 by Air Transport World. Therefore, it is obvious that this airline is a very prominent and growin g airline in the world. Market Overview Market overview represents the general market share and growth potentiality of a company. The Ethiopian airlines comprise as many as 83 international destinations and 20 domestic destinations. It includes 49 cities of Africa, 13 in America and Europe and 21 in Asia and the Middle East. The division of cargo serves 24 locations, which includes 15 in Africa, 2 in Europe and seven in the Middle (Eas Crespo et al. 2012). As a part of the company policy, apart from the main activities, this airline also earns revenue from maintenance service to aircraft of foreign airlines and specialized training to both foreign and Ethiopian trainees. In the year 2005, this airline adopted a vision named vision 2010'. It targeted to increase passenger traffic to around 3 million and revenue to the US $ 1 billion. By 2010, these airlines achieved far all the objectives that were set in vision 2010. In 2010, the airlines adopted another vision named vision 2025'. It targeted a strategy of development for 15 years. Under this vision, the airlines target to increase its fleet to around 120, destination number to 90, carrying 18 million passengers (De Neufville 2015). In the year 2010, Ethiopian Airlines signed a deal for acquiring 49% of Air Malawi, which is a Malawian carrier. The government of Malawi would own the remaining shareholdings. Impact of changes in regulations and operational environment within the region Various changes in the operational environment and regulations affect an airline company. Ethiopian airlines are no exception to this. The general condition of African continent is not so well during recent times. The continent is clouded with poverty, civil and political unrest (Dinges 2012). These factors are strong enough to affect the operations of Ethiopian Airlines. The social and political environment in which it exists would affect any corporation. The unstable social, political, and economic environment of Africa have adversely affected many airlines in the continent of Africa. However, Ethiopian Airlines were an exception. These factors did affect the performance of the airlines, but the overall growth potentiality and revenue-earning capacity of the airlines were not hampered. In spite of various regulation changes by the government and various adverse social and economic factors of the environment, this airline continued to expand its operations an earn good amount of rev enue (Ellison and Stafford 2014). There are some factors for this. They are discussed as follows: The most important reason is perhaps that this airline has one of the most dedicated and exceptionally committed workforces in entire Africa. This is obviously a huge advantage for the airlines. The employees of this airline do not simply regard themselves as just an employee under an employment contract with the company. They very much consider themselves as an integral part of the entire family of Ethiopian Airlines. They consider themselves as a part of the mission and vision of the corporation. This is indeed a very exceptional advantage to any corporation (Gssling and Peeters 2015). The policy of the airline is very effective. This is more so about cost leadership. The corporation is very strict in the aspect of cost leadership. The company aimed at a lowest possible cost per unit while delivering services that meets the global standards. This has given the corporation an advantage regarding flexibility of pricing. Next reason for the growth of the airlines despite unfavorable operational regulations is that the policies and strategies of this airline are all on the long-term basis. The 15-year strategy is a very prominent example of this fact. Determination of long-term strategy has helped the organization to survive the adverse changes in regulation and operational environment (Helmreich 2012). Another very important reason for the success and survival of this airline can be attributed to the corporate governance of the organization. The management and ownership of those airlines are completely separate and distinct which has given this organization an excellent advantage. Top line opportunities and challenges There are many regulations and operational changes recently in Africa. The overall economic and social situation is not conducive for growth of business. The changes have affected most of the businesses and large corporations in Africa. It had an effect on Ethiopian airlines also. These changes created many opportunities and challenges for this airline (Rodrigues and Cusick 2012) These are explained below. Opportunities The first major opportunity that cropped up because of changes was that those changes adversely affected the competitor organizations. The competitor organizations were affected primarily due to the changes in government regulations and general economic depression. As a result, their growth and revenue decreased. This was a major advantage to Ethiopian Airlines. The organization took advantage of this fact, and it earned much more revenue than other major competitors like Kenyan Airways. This was largely due the good corporate governance and strategy of the management of Ethiopian Airlines (Sheehan 2013). Government regulations also helped the organization expand its operations to other countries of other continents. For example, the company announced recently that they wanted to expand their reach to Latin American countries and some countries of Asia. However, the conformation dates were yet to be announced by the airlines. Additional revenue opportunities cropped up due to some of the regulation changes made by the government. The government allowed training to foreign airlines company. Because of this, Ethiopian Airlines started to give training and aircraft maintenance facilities to both airlines of different African countries and domestic airlines of Ethiopia. This increased the revenue of the company largely. This change of regulation obviously proved to be an advantage for the organization (Weckman et al. 2014). Lufthansa Airways are the largest airlines in entire Europe. This company provided mentorship service to the Ethiopian Airlines. This was a major opportunity for the airlines as it received mentorship service from such a large airlines company of Europe. It would provide various strategic advantages to the Ethiopian Airlines. Challenges The major challenge increased in the aviation fuel cost. The economic depression in Africa led to the increase in the fuel cost in Ethiopia due to government financial policy. The increase in fuel cost means a major increase in cost per unit. This can affect the cost leadership policy of the organization (Merkert and Morrell 2012). The African aviation industry is large and growing rapidly. It is also very lucrative. This has prompted many foreign airlines company to open their operations in this continent. Most of these airlines are very powerful and can capture the African market. This is posing a great challenge to Ethiopian Airlines. The government policy to improve roads and railway infrastructure can lead to a decrease in the number of airline customers. Potential Scenario for the next 1 to 5 years reflecting the competitive landscape As mentioned earlier, African aviation industry is large and growing. There are many big players in this industry in Africa, both domestic and foreign. The lucrative African industry for aviation is also attracting much other large aviation company from foreign continents. These can prove to be a very tough competition for Ethiopian Airlines shortly (Wensveen 2015). The major competitors of this organization are Air France, Egypt Air Holding Company and Kenya Airways Limited. They can provide a more severe competition in future. Ethiopian airlines have recently started receiving mentorship services from Lufthansa Airways. This is a good advantage for the organization. This can prove to be a critical factor in surviving the future competition and gaining the upper hand. The tough competition can pose as a big challenge for the organization in the future. Tough competition would require the company to decrease the price of its service. However, it can prove to be difficult in a situation where aviation fuel price is rising. This is indeed a challenging situation for the organization in the future scenario. The recent rise and growth of Emirates and Qatar Airways are threatening the future scenario for Ethiopian Airlines. These two airline companies are growing rapidly and looking to establish a strong foothold in the African continent. Both of these companies have a strong financial position and good customer base (Sheehan 2013). From the above discussion, it is evident that the future holds a tough competition scenario for Ethiopian Airlines. Key recommendations for survival and growth of Ethiopian airlines in future It is evident from the previous discussions that this organization is facing some immediate challenges and some threats for the near future. Tough competition is a major factor among the challenges and threats. The increase in fuel price due to government policy and environmental challenges such as social unrest are adding to the list of threats for the future scenario for this airline. Some recommendations can be given to the company for helping it to survive and grow in the challenging environment of the future. These recommendations are given below: The corporate governance of the organization is efficient and strong, as discussed earlier. However, it can be improved further. If the management can be made more muscular, then the company has a strong chance of eliminating the competition of the future. Flexibility should be added to the management and governance. The element of flexibility is very crucial for surviving the uncertain environment of the future. The company can incorporate some experience members of management of reputed global airlines (Sheehan 2013). Those experienced management personnel have already faced tough situations in the past. They are experienced enough to handle these types of difficult situations. That is why it is required to incorporate such management personnel from other competitor airlines in the organization. This can also give to the organization various insights about the competitors and their strategies. The company must aim to maintain their role of cost leadership. They must try cost reduction as much as possible so that they can decrease the price of services offered by them. It is utmost essential in this competitive environment (Ellison and Stafford 2014) Alliance with one or more of their competitor can also prove to be fruitful. Alliance with the other main competitors can increase the revenue and eliminate unwanted competition. Many companies have gained the advantage from alliances and mergers. Management of Ethiopian airlines can consider this strategy. The company can also use sound future forecasting techniques that can help them analyze the future and act appropriately beforehand. Conclusion In conclusion, it can be said that Ethiopian Airlines is a leading airline in Africa, and one of the popular airlines of the world. It has various positive aspects, and the company is growing rapidly and expanding its operations to various foreign countries. However, it also faces some challenges due changes in environmental, operational and government regulation of the region. There is also a tough competition from some of the leading airline companies of the world. To tackle all these factors, some recommendations have been suggested at the end of this report, like providing flexibility to the management, maintaining the role of cost leadership, etc. References Adamski, W., 2012. Celeste Ray’s Essays

Celeste Ray’s Essays Celeste Ray’s Paper Celeste Ray’s Paper In Celeste Ray’s book: Highland Heritage: Scottish Americans in the South. The author takes a close look at what it means to be Scottish in America and more specifically, in the American South. Ray takes a scholarly approach to Scottish immigration to the South in several chapters that deal with the construction of Scottish identity, the emergence of the heritage movement in the Carolinas as well as the reemergence of the Highland Games. Ray traces the history of this movement and shows how it includes diverse threads of Scottish identity. In the preface to Highland Heritage: Scottish Americans in the American South, Celeste Ray explains that she had meant to write a different book, on the archaeology of Iron Age Europe. Fortunately for the anthropology of British populations, her project changed into a richly documented, long-term, regional analysis of the southern Scottish heritage movement. Centered on the Cape Fear Valley of North Carolina, home of the largest settlement of Highlanders in the United States, the study deals not only with the heritage of the approximately 20,000 Highlanders who settled in North Carolina before the American Revolution but also with that of subsequent waves of settlers from other Scottish regions, as well.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In Ray’s book, she rejects the influential ideology that Euro-American ethnicity is generally in decline and that many pe ople claim Scottish or Celtic identity, distinct from the contrasting Anglo-Saxon identity. The Scottish heritage movement celebrates the combining of   Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"historical incidents, folk memories, selected traditions, and often sheer fantasy to interpret a past in a form meaningful for a particular group or individual at a particular point in time.† (Ray, 2000). Ray also includes festivals deep in heritage in Scotland and the relationships between the groups of the Scottish within their homeland and in the south as well.   Ray points out that half of all Scottish societies and one-third of the 200 U.S. clan gatherings and festivals are located in the South. After nine years of participating in and interviewing at community events, Ray studies the identity politics borne out in the attire, oral traditions, publications, clan pride, the role of women, songs and dances, heritage dinners, game innovations and displays of weaponry.Ray is very forthright about the irony of t his movement. From the situation in which American tourist dollars pay for the upkeep of castles, whose eighteenth century owners demands probably pushed Scots into leaving, while much that is regarded as traditional was invented by English landowners in the Victorian period of the 19th century. Much of this book asks for further development in more detail. Questions such as: How do movies like Braveheart and Rob Roy change the way in which this movement operates? How will Scottish devolution affect the way in which Scotland relates to American tourists? What will the younger generation, interested in the competitive aspects of Highland games, make of it as they assume more control? How much influence will the Celtic fringe of Viking and Gaelic re-enactors have in the future, especially in confronting the conservative religious aspects of the movement? The movement encompasses both participants with a deep trans generational awareness of their heritage (Ray, 2000) and those who have reclaimed their identity. They participate in organizations and events throughout the year involving distinctive dress, food, and religious services, often reinforced and refreshed with transnational links to the Scottish homeland.Ray views the Scottish American travelers not as tourist but as pilgrims that have come to experience a culture that they see as theirs to partake of. (Ray, 2000) The visions of Highland past and heritage are continually being refined by the fact that heritage pilgrims seek out native authorities that engage in a mutual sharing dance and athletic techniques, music, and genealogical research. (Ray, 2000) These heritage pilgrimages also carry ritualistic and religious qualities. Many travel to Scotland because it is the home of their Presbyterian heritage. (Ray, 2000)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã ‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Ray also points out that there is a dramatic enhancement of the belief in shared kinship and a united identity among Scottish Americans through pilgrimages to Scotland by clan societies. The preservation of a chief’s residence and/or clan lands is the main goal of many clan societies. (135) There is a great drive among the clan societies to not only visit clan territories but also to enshrine an original site of clan residence. Those that do not have surviving ancestral estates or a chiefship are increasingly establishing heritage centers. This provides them with a focal point as their ancestral home. (Ray, 2000) This is not a reflection of the actual relict landscapes of black houses and clachans of ancestral emigrants rather it is a cognitive map of the clanscape that is oriented toward the home of the elite.(Ray, 2000)Ray’s work serves as a helpful work of literature in attempting to understand the behavior of modern Americans as they search for an identity and a community that conforms to the ideas of being â€Å"southern† as well. Ray explores how the Scottish themes and legends merge with southern culture and their identity to produce a unique offspring and a complex sense of identify for the Scottish living in the South. In this book, Ray asks how and why and where we use memories of our ancestral pasts to provide a sense of identity and community in the present. In this attempt to do so, Ray offers an original and insightful examination of what it means to be Scottish in America.
